Ranked Progression Updates Coming in Patch 7.3

Learn how Patch 7.3 is improving performance evaluation, Ranked Energy rewards, role incentives, and Legendary Ranked progression.

On the heels of our changes to the last patch, we’re back and making some more adjustments to Ranked progression. In Patch 7.3, we’ll be expanding performance evaluation so that it will recognize more of the ways you contribute to your team’s victories. We’ll also be making some more improvements to Ranked Energy and Legendary Ranked progression.

A more complete view of performance

While kills and KDA are always important indicators of performance, we know they don’t tell the whole story of a match. Decision making, objective control, teamwork, vision, and map play all play just as important of a role to winning as your kills.

So in 7.3, we’ll be updating the SA and MVP scoring system with a more tailored evaluation model. Rather than just applying the same standards to everyone, the system will consider your lane, champion and role. Which basically just means you’ll receive more recognition for contributions such as:

  • Vision impact and crowd control
  • Objective participation, including dragon control
  • Pushing and coordinated team play
  • Frontline damage absorption
  • Supporting teammates and creating opportunities

We want to emphasize again that kills and KDA will continue to matter, but they will no longer define the entire evaluation. Our goal with this new system is that we’re giving every role a fairer chance to be recognized for the impact that they have on helping their team win, not just the statistics that are easiest to see on the scoreboard. We hope this will encourage you to focus on the decisions and teamwork that create winning opportunities, even when those contributions don’t result in a high kill count.

More meaningful Ranked Energy rewards

Last patch, we introduced Ranked Energy rewards that were tied to your in-game performance. And this patch, we’ll be building on that foundation by improving the performance ratings that determine how you’re recognized and rewarded. So, if you perform well, you will have the opportunity to earn more Ranked Energy.

We’re also adding a new rating above S called, Legendary S, which will recognize truly exceptional performances and provide additional Ranked Energy for standout games.

Incentives for needed positions

Additionally, lane-specific Ranked Energy bonuses will provide an additional incentive for those of you who are willing to help fill roles that need more players. These bonuses are intended to support healthier role distribution, improve matchmaking quality, and help reduce queue times.

To keep the system balanced, lane incentive rewards will have a weekly cap. You can earn meaningful bonuses for helping fill needed roles, but rewards will stop once the weekly limit is reached.

And don’t worry, choosing Any Position and being assigned autofill will still be treated differently. If you choose Any Position, you will receive bonus Ranked Energy as a thank you for helping maintain a healthy role distribution. Since being autofilled can result in a less preferred experience, autofilled players will also receive a larger Ranked Energy bonus as compensation. Both bonuses will have a weekly cap.

Legendary Ranked updates

And last but certainly not least, Legendary Ranked will also receive some progression improvements this patch. If you reach Grandmaster in your regular Ranked queues in the previous season you will have a lower entry threshold when returning, reducing the amount of climbing needed to re-enter the mode.

We’re also introducing a new promotion mechanic for the Legendary Commander tier called Legendary Trial. Once activated, the Trial runs alongside your normal Legendary Ranked climb, giving you another way to earn promotion without changing how your regular progress works. Strong runs of games can help you complete the Trial and move directly to the next tier, while every match still counts toward your usual Ranked point gains and losses. The goal is to give you a clearer target to work toward, reward sustained strong performance more directly, and create more meaningful milestones as you compete at the highest levels.
